Fashion Design and Dressmaking

This course equips learners with competencies required to designing, cutting and sewing of different garments. It involves the process of turning raw fabric into finished clothing using pattern, measurement, sewing techniques, and a keen eye for fashion trends.

Graduates of this course will be awarded a nationally recognized certificate upon successful completion, examined by NITA (Grade III - I).

Training Format

Face-to-face, instructor-led sessions supported by hands-on sewing machine for practice. The course may include short projects, group work, and assessments. Blended learning (in-person + online) may be used where applicable.

Minimum entry requirements

  • Minimum KCPE certificate or its equivalent (basic literacy and numeracy).
  • Preferred: Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) for advanced or modular options
  • National ID or valid identification document.
  • Passport-sized photos for registration.
  • Personal stationery (notebooks, pens, etc.).
  • Fashion design and dressmaking tool kit.
  • Willingness to adhere to the institution's code of conduct and class attendance policy.

Equipment available at institution

Sewing machine, tailor quality iron and iron board, assorted needles, assorted threads, chalk, fashion design rulers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, trainees will possess practical skills and technical knowledge to design, sewing and cutting of any garment.

  • Interpret and apply basic designing.
  • Ability to install sewing equipment.
  • Cutting and sewing of different garments.
  • Identify and safely use fashion design tools, instruments and equipment
  • Diagnose any problem in the sewing machine.
  • Understand and apply fashion design safety practices and relevant codes of practice.
  • Prepare for trade testing under NITA certification requirements.
