Welding and Fabrications

The Welding and Fabrications course is designed to provide students with essential technical skills in metalwork processes. It focuses on both welding techniques and metal fabrication, combining theory and hands-on practice in a workshop setting.
The training program runs for 12 months, structured into 3 academic terms, with internal continuous assessments and a final external NITA examination. The curriculum is aligned with industry needs and safety standards.

Minimum entry requirements

Age Requirement:

  • Minimum 16 years

Physical Fitness:

  • Must be in good health and physically capable of handling technical and practical tasks

Other Requirements:

  • Keen interest in technical or mechanical work
  • Discipline, safety awareness, and willingness to learn

Modules Covered

Term-by-Term Breakdown

Term 1: Introduction to Welding

  • Workshop and personal safety
  • Introduction to welding tools and equipment
  • Types of metals and materials
  • Basic measuring, marking, and cutting
  • Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  • Simple welding joints and positions
  • Internal theory and practical assessments

Term 2: Intermediate Welding & Fabrication

  • Advanced arc welding techniques
  • Introduction to Oxy-Acetylene welding and cutting
  • Introduction to MIG and TIG welding (where applicable)
  • Sheet metal work and fabrication of simple structures
  • Technical drawing and interpretation
  • Maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Internal examinations and project work

Term 3: Specialized Skills & Final Assessment

  • Pipe welding and structural fabrication
  • Layout and fitting of metal components
  • Welding defect identification and correction
  • Practical workshop projects and simulations
  • Entrepreneurship and job readiness training
  • Preparation for NITA Trade Test (Grade III)

Assessment and Certification

  • Internal Examinations: Conducted at the end of each term; includes theory and practical skills tests.
  • External Examination: Final assessment administered by NITA (National Industrial Training Authority) at the end of the 3rd term.
    • On successful completion, trainees receive the NITA Trade Test Certificate (Grade III)
    • Eligible to progress to Grade II and Grade I with further training or work experience.
