Mathare Vocational Training Centre

Mathare VTC is under the Nairobi City County Government. It is located within Mathare slum, one of the biggest slum in Kenya. The institution serve people from various area, not only those from the surrounding slums. The centre commitment is to offer market driven courses /skills which leads to employment and self-employment. It is registered with Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA). Courses which are offered at the Centre are, Information Communication Technology, Fashion design, Hairdressing and Beauty therapy, Food and Beverage, Building Technology, Motor vehicle Technology, Electrical Technology, Driving. The institution also offer tailor made short courses for the purpose of certification. Mathare VTC emphasizes on soft skills to make sure graduates fit in various working environment.

The Centre has experienced trainers in all the courses it offers, modest equipped workshops for the purpose of hands-on training which is vital for world of work. 

Mathare Vocational Training Centre stands as a pillar of hope and empowerment within the heart of Nairobi. Deeply rooted in the Mathare community, the institution is committed to equipping youth and adults with practical, market relevant skills that lead to  employment and self-reliance. Accredited by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA), Mathare VTC offers certified training in trades such as tailoring, electrical installation, catering, beauty therapy, and ICT.

The centre is tailored to meet the needs of a densely populated, low income community, providing affordable, hands-on education to learners who may otherwise lack access to formal training. With modest infrastructure that includes workshops and practical training areas, the VTC continues to deliver quality instruction despite urban challenges. More than just a training facility, Mathare VTC plays a critical role in addressing youth unemployment, bridging skills gaps, and contributing to sustainable community development.

 

Course Overview

Mathare VTC is currently offering diverse range of accredited technical and vocational courses, which majors on practical training on whole course work. The institution also works closely with employers/ industry to bring learners at the same level with what is there in the market.

Main Courses Offered

Courses are available at Artisan Level and Grade III, II, and I, with examinations administered by:

  • National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) 

  • Grade III – 6 months 

  • Grade II  - 6 months 

  • Grade I - 3 months 

  • Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC)

  • Duration – 1year
